Furnace smells like gas or burning?

My furnace smells like gas, what do I do? Here is the honest version: what you can safely check yourself in the next five minutes, what a technician usually finds when it is not that, and exactly what it costs to find out.

If this means no heat in the house: A home with no heat is treated as urgent and prioritized, often same-day. The emergency button on the booking page gets a callback within 60 seconds.

Check these first

  1. A gas smell (rotten eggs): leave the house now, do not flip any switches on the way out, and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Call us after that.
  2. A dusty burning smell for the first few minutes of the season is dust on the exchanger burning off. If it lasts more than an hour, shut the furnace off.
  3. An electrical or plastic burning smell: turn the furnace off at its switch and call. Do not wait for it to clear.
  4. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and call 911 from outside.

If one of these fixes it, you owe us nothing and we are glad. If not, the next part is what the visit is for.

What a technician usually finds

Yellow flame. A yellow tip means too little primary air or clogged burner ports, and clogged ports are a cleaning, not a part. If the flue is sooted or corroded the products of combustion are not leaving the house properly, which is the part that stops being about comfort.

Heat exchanger. An exchanger that rusted through was rusting for years, and what rusts it is the same thing that rusts the burners: moisture and dirty combustion. The burners come out, get cleaned, and corroded ones are replaced, always. And low gas pressure or dust on the heat transfer surfaces finishes the job; the book sets the pressure and filters the air on every heating call.

These are the causes in the manufacturers' troubleshooting charts and the trade handbooks our technicians train on, in plain words. The visit proves which one it is with a meter before anything is replaced.

What keeps it from coming back

Filtering every cubic foot before it reaches the cabinet is what keeps the burner clean between visits.

The repair and the replacement are always both on the paper, in writing, warranty or not.

What it costs to find out

$59 on weekdays, $159 evenings and weekends. Published and final, pre-tax, and the price is the price whether we find a loose wire or a bad motor.
